Narrabri Shire Council is inviting community feedback on a revised Social Media Policy, now on public exhibition until 5:00pm Monday 21 September 2026.
Social media has become one of the primary ways Council shares information, provides service updates, responds to questions and engages with the community. As online platforms continue to evolve, Council is reviewing its policy to ensure its social media channels remain safe, respectful and informative spaces for everyone.
The proposed changes aim to:
Provide greater clarity around expected behaviour on Council-managed social media accounts.
Strengthen Council's ability to manage misinformation and inappropriate content.
Support respectful and constructive community discussion.
Ensure Council's social media pages remain a trusted source of timely and accurate information.
Provide greater transparency around moderation processes and decision-making.
A key proposed change is the introduction of a One Strike Warning Process. Under this approach, individuals who breach Council's Social Media Policy would receive a warning following their first breach. Any subsequent breach may result in the individual being blocked from the relevant Council social media channel. In cases involving threats, serious harassment, discriminatory content, unlawful material or other significant risks, Council may take immediate action.
Council welcomes robust discussion, differing opinions and constructive feedback. However, Council also has a responsibility to ensure its social media channels remain safe and welcoming environments where community members can ask questions, share feedback and access reliable information.
